Whenever I think of walls, Pink Floyd’s Wall comes up. Roger Waters’ view was breakdown the wall. It’s a cynical view. He isolated himself in walls.

My view is that the walls are built not as a prison but to create solitude.

We need walls to live our lives. If you think about it, everything has its own walls. It’s there as boundaries to the needs of the human beings. Qin Shi Huang built the Great Wall to keep out the Mongols. That’s a need for protection of a sovereignty.

In nature, there are no walls, only the natural ones that we consider as walls. In theory, we shouldn’t have walls following nature, but we are of different species outside of nature. We are the only species that kill its own kind if you disagree. The walls are built to dispute, what is mine is mine, what is yours is yours. You build walls within your walls for your needs. Having walls for human beings are as natural as the nature itself. Thicker and stronger the better, like a safe to protect your valuables. A sheet of paper can be a wall as well. Anything to be hidden must have walls of some sort.

Metaphorically, it is used as to hide, protect, being alone and so on. But it’s never used as a comfort.

It is so defining that it gives me pleasure. It’s definite. Unlike anything that I’ve tried to get to know including an inner journey into myself. We are all confused before we die, but the wall is defining, it’s a line if clarity. We create lines in our heads and then transfer them to paper or a computer and then it becomes concrete boundaries. It becomes definite. We live inside those boundaries that we’ve created in our heads. We break them down, but we build new ones, according to the technology of the time.

I’m at an age where my body is wearing out like an old car. A car is machine, but machines age, too. The machine can be new again with replaced parts, but we don’t spare parts readily available for us. And it needs to be a perfect match with our own DNA which is hard to find.

I used to hit my 7 iron 150 to 169 yards. Now, it only goes 125 at best no matter how hard I try to hit it longer. One day, I wouldn’t be able to lift the club itself. Deterioration is inevitable, death is certain. No one knows after that.

I was putting on a pants in a scarcely decorated room with no furniture. I needed something to lean on to get my pants on. The last thing left to lean on was the wall.

벽을 생각할 때면 언제나 핑크 플로이드(Pink Floyd)의 'The Wall'이 떠오른다. 로저 워터스(Roger Waters)의 관점은 벽을 허무는 것이었다. 냉소적인 시각이다. 그는 벽 안에 자신을 고립시켰다. 내가 보기에 벽은 감옥으로서가 아니라 온전한 자유를 위해 지어지는 것이다.

우리가 살아가기 위해서는 벽이 필요하다. 생각해보면 모든 것에는 저마다의 벽이 있다. 그것은 인간의 필요에 의한 경계로서 존재한다. 진시황은 몽골족을 막기 위해 만리장성을 쌓았다. 그것은 주권 보호를 위한 필요였다.

자연에는 벽이 없다. 단지 우리가 벽으로 여기는 자연적인 것들만 있을 뿐이다. 이론적으로는 자연을 따라 우리에게도 벽이 없어야 하지만, 우리는 자연 밖의 다른 종이다. 우리는 의견이 다르면 동족을 죽이는 유일한 종이다. 벽은 논쟁을 위해, 즉 '내 것은 내 것, 네 것은 네 것'을 가리기 위해 지어진다. 당신은 당신의 필요에 따라 벽 안에 또 다른 벽을 쌓는다. 인간에게 벽을 갖는다는 것은 자연 그 자체만큼이나 자연스러운 일이다. 귀중품을 보호하는 금고처럼 두껍고 튼튼할수록 좋다. 종이 한 장도 벽이 될 수 있다. 숨겨져야 할 모든 것에는 어떤 형태든 벽이 있어야만 한다.

은유적으로 벽은 숨기거나, 보호하거나, 홀로 있기 위해 사용된다. 하지만 결코 안락함을 주지는 않는다. 벽은 너무나 규정적이라 내게 기쁨을 준다. 그것은 명확하다. 내면으로의 여행을 포함해 내가 알려고 노력했던 그 어떤 것과도 다르다. 우리는 죽기 전까지 모두 혼란스러워하지만, 벽은 규정적이다. 그것은 명료함의 선이다. 우리는 머릿속에 선을 긋고, 그것을 종이나 컴퓨터로 옮기면 구체적인 경계가 된다. 그것은 확정적인 것이 된다. 우리는 우리 머릿속에서 만든 그 경계 안에서 살아간다. 우리는 그것을 허물지만, 그 시대의 기술에 따라 새로운 벽을 다시 쌓는다.

나는 내 몸이 낡은 자동차처럼 닳아가는 나이가 되었다. 자동차는 기계지만 기계도 늙는다. 기계는 부품을 교체하면 다시 새것이 될 수 있지만, 우리에게는 당장 쓸 수 있는 여분의 부품이 주어지지 않는다. 게다가 그것은 찾기 힘든 우리 자신의 DNA와 완벽하게 일치해야만 한다.

예전에는 7번 아이언으로 150에서 169야드를 날리곤 했다. 지금은 아무리 세게 치려 해도 기껏해야 125야드밖에 나가지 않는다. 언젠가는 클럽조차 들 수 없게 될 것이다. 쇠퇴는 피할 수 없고 죽음은 확실하다. 그 이후는 아무도 모른다.

가구 하나 없이 텅 빈 방에서 바지를 입고 있었다. 바지를 입으려면 몸을 기댈 무언가가 필요했다. 내게 기댈 수 있는 마지막 남은 것은 벽뿐이었다.
