Now, it’s about movement.
Photography is still. Video or film is motion. Music is motion, it doesn’t stand still. It’s far more complicated when things move. Understanding of something moving is far more difficult than something sitting still.
Unlike golf where you are trying to hit the ball that is not moving at all.
That is why Photography has become nonchalant to all people, it’s easy to understand. They, whoever they are, made it easy for us because it’s easy to understand. On the surface level that is.
If you linger a bit and really start analyzing a photo, it would end up in world politics. The difference between a good photo and a bad photo is just that; bad photo doesn’t get you anywhere, but good photo tells you a story, however simple a story might be. Simplicity is art.
When I was young, I came upon an image that changed my perspective forever. It was a progressive picture of a bull from complete detailed drawing turning into just simple lines.
It was by Picasso. A man I strive be. He was a living legend!
You don’t get meet greatness in your lifetime that often personally. But we live in vicarious world.
And greatness is subjective. I see a bit of greatness in everyone. Everyone has greatness some more than others. Really great ones are the ones like Picasso and the people who changed our way of thinking and living.
Put yourself in their shoes. Emulate them. Find an old master who you like and try to be him or her. Copy their style, shoot like them. When you’ve done that, you will find your own style.
이제, 이야기는 ‘움직임’으로 넘어갑니다.
사진은 정지해 있습니다. 반면 비디오나 영화는 움직임입니다. 음악 역시 움직임이며, 결코 한 곳에 머물러 있지 않습니다. 무언가가 움직일 때 상황은 훨씬 더 복잡해집니다. 움직이는 대상을 이해하는 것은 가만히 멈춰 있는 대상을 이해하는 것보다 훨씬 더 어렵기 때문입니다.
마치 전혀 움직이지 않는 공을 치려는 골프와는 완전히 다른 차원의 이야기죠.
이것이 바로 사진이 사람들에게 그토록 부담 없고 친숙한 존재가 된 이유입니다. 사진은 이해하기 쉬우니까요. 그들이 누구든 간에, 우리를 위해 사진을 쉽게 만들어 주었습니다. 표면적으로는 그렇다는 말입니다.
하지만 잠시 멈춰 서서 사진을 진정으로 깊이 분석하기 시작하면, 그것은 결국 세계 정치와 같은 거대한 이야기로 귀결되기도 합니다. 좋은 사진과 나쁜 사진의 차이는 바로 여기에 있습니다. 나쁜 사진은 당신을 어디로도 데려가지 못하지만, 좋은 사진은 아무리 단순해 보일지라도 당신에게 이야기를 들려줍니다. 단순함이 곧 예술입니다.
저는 젊은 시절, 제 관점을 영원히 바꿔버린 이미지 하나를 우연히 마주했습니다. 그것은 매우 세밀하게 묘사된 황소 그림이 점차 단순한 선으로 변해가는 과정을 담은 연작이었습니다.
바로 피카소의 작품이었습니다. 제가 그토록 닮고 싶어 하는 사람, 그는 살아있는 전설이었습니다!
살면서 그런 위대함을 직접 마주할 기회는 흔치 않습니다. 하지만 우리는 간접 경험의 세상(Vicarious world)에 살고 있습니다.
물론 위대함이라는 것은 주관적입니다. 저는 모든 사람에게서 조금씩 위대함을 봅니다. 누구나 위대함을 가지고 있으며, 어떤 이들은 조금 더 많이 가지고 있기도 하죠. 하지만 진짜 위대한 이들은 피카소처럼 우리의 사고방식과 삶의 방식을 송두리째 바꿔놓은 사람들입니다.
그들의 입장이 되어 보십시오. 그들을 닮으려 노력하십시오. 당신이 좋아하는 거장을 찾아 그 사람이 되어 보려 애쓰십시오. 그들의 스타일을 모방하고, 그들처럼 찍어보십시오.
그 과정을 모두 거치고 나면, 비로소 당신만의 스타일을 찾게 될 것입니다.
