I’ve taught many students in Laos including an 18-year-old who wanted to go to US university. His mother paid me $20,000 for 2 months to teach him English and Photography.
I thought that he was then old enough to go on a trip by himself. So, I sent to him to Vang Vieng by himself for 2 days to photograph. This was before the new highway which takes 1hr and a half. At that time, it took four hours through the rugged mountain with endless potholes.
He would have to find lodging and eat by himself. He would have to be responsible for himself. He was an introverted mama’s boy at the time. He hadn’t done something like that all of his life. I thought he needed to be independent.
He came back fine. And I looked at the photos he took…

It’s the man’s face that first comes to you, but look at the background. There are three women.
I immediately saw that he had a unique vision. Because for a beginner, he was different.
I turned it into black & white and I enter the man’s portrait photo in a contest by Lao Airlines. At that time, they were a lot of photography contests and this one seemed big and prestigious enough.
Award ceremony was on a blistering day with rain and harsh wind, but it was at Crown Plaza Hotel, considered the best hotel in Laos. His whole gang of friends and family and his mother were there along with me and my wife. Usually in Laos, they give the grand prize to a Lao, so I didn’t expect for the top prize. But I knew that my boy would get something.
They had announced all the winners and I thought I was wrong. Then, a tall man came out and announced a special award of excellence. My boy’s entry was the only black & white entry in the competition. In Laos, they don’t understand the beauty of b & w. They haven’t got the lesson. All in all, he got the third place out of the competition behind 2 Laos. Unprecedented event. A foreigner winning such a big prize was unheard of at that time. I was so proud of him.
As the lesson went on, he showed immense patience working on Photoshop. He made a poster. That showed me that he had a talent in design not photography. See, photography is decisive moment as Henri Cartier Bresson phrased it. It’s a momentary capture where as design is about thinking for a long time. Not that photography doesn’t require thinking and patience, but the shutter is faster than a blink of an eye. It’s a different medium, different train of a thought.
The boy is 10 years older and wiser now. He thanked me last year for recognizing his talent early on.
He’s working at a design company and photographing again and they look advanced and thoughtful. I’m proud of myself when I encounter such a happening. What I did made a difference in someone else’s life.
Let there be Light.
It’s the first word spoken by God for those who believe in the bible.
Light
Without light, there would be nothing. Without light there wouldn’t be photography because light is essence of photography. You must first learn to read the light meaning how it falls on your subject. Contrast, composition and subject is all you need to know to begin your journey in photography. Simple matter that gets more complicated as you get more passion for it.
This is where someone like me comes in and gives you recognition and direction. It’s not just about photography, but it’s about how you perceive yourself and finding who you are. Photography is a medium that everyone has in their hands now in this high-tech world. It’s taken for granted. It’s in curiosity that will answer your burning desire to know. And to know is the key to in the future.
Photography’s fate depends entirely on science. Biggest camera in the world has 3.2 Gigapixels. My Canon 5D has 22.3 megapixel. That’s all you need in our normal life. You are not analyzing far end of the universe. But, with this fast-developing technology and AI, who knows how taking a picture will change for us.
With AI, best writers can become best producers of photographs writing precise detailed prompts that AI can understand easily. Who knows where AI will go?
But my belief is that Art will eventually be analogue.
To create art, there needs a human touch, a singular human touch. That is art.
“라오스에서 많은 학생을 가르쳤는데, 그중에는 미국 대학 진학을 목표로 하던 18살 학생도 있었습니다. 그 학생의 어머니는 영어와 사진 과외비로 두 달에 2만 달러를 지불했죠.
저는 그 아이가 이제 혼자 여행을 떠나도 될 만큼 컸다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 사진 촬영을 위해 이틀간 방비엥으로 혼자 여행을 보냈습니다. 지금은 고속도로가 뚫려 1시간 반이면 가지만, 그때는 움푹 패인 곳 투성이인 험한 산길을 4시간이나 달려야 했습니다.
아이는 직접 숙소를 구하고 끼니도 혼자 해결해야 했죠. 스스로 책임지는 법을 배워야 했으니까요. 당시 그 아이는 내성적인 ‘마마보이’였고, 평생 그런 일을 한 번도 해본 적이 없었습니다. 저는 그에게 자립심이 필요하다고 판단했습니다.
아이는 무사히 돌아왔습니다. 그리고 아이가 찍어온 사진을 봤는데… 와! 정말 감탄이 나왔습니다. 라오스 사람 특유의 기품(dignity)이 넘치는 남자의 모습을 믿을 수 없을 만큼 훌륭하게 포착했더군요!
가장 먼저 시선을 사로잡는 건 남자의 얼굴이지만, 배경을 한번 보세요. 뒤에 세 명의 여인들이 보일 겁니다.
저는 단박에 이 아이가 독창적인 시선(unique vision)을 가졌다는 걸 알아봤습니다. 초보자치고는 확실히 달랐거든요. 저는 그 사진을 흑백으로 변환해서 라오항공 사진 공모전에 출품했습니다. 당시에는 사진 대회가 많았는데, 그 대회가 꽤 규모도 크고 권위 있어 보였거든요.
시상식 날은 비바람이 거세게 몰아치는 궂은 날씨였지만, 행사는 라오스 최고의 호텔로 꼽히는 크라운 플라자에서 열렸습니다. 제 아내와 저뿐만 아니라, 학생의 친구들과 가족, 그리고 어머니까지 모두 참석했습니다.
라오스에서는 보통 자국민에게 대상을 주기 때문에 1등은 기대하지 않았습니다. 하지만 저는 ‘우리 제자’가 분명 상을 받을 거라 확신했습니다.”
“수상자들이 모두 호명되었는데 제 학생의 이름이 없어서, 제가 틀렸나 싶었습니다. 그때, 키 큰 남자가 나와서 특별 우수상(Special Award of Excellence)을 발표했습니다. 제 제자의 작품은 그 대회에서 유일한 흑백 사진이었습니다. 라오스 사람들은 아직 흑백 사진의 미학을 잘 이해하지 못합니다. 그 아름다움을 배우지 못한 것이죠. 결과적으로 1, 2등을 한 라오스인들에 이어 전체 3위를 차지했습니다. 전례 없는 일이었습니다. 당시 외국인이 그렇게 큰 상을 받는 건 들어본 적도 없는 일이었으니까요. 저는 그 아이가 정말 자랑스러웠습니다.
수업이 계속되면서, 저는 그 아이가 포토샵 작업을 할 때 엄청난 끈기를 보여주는 것을 목격했습니다. 포스터도 만들었죠. 그걸 보며 저는 아이가 사진보다는 디자인에 재능이 있다는 걸 깨달았습니다. 앙리 카르티에 브레송(Henri Cartier-Bresson)이 말했듯, 사진은 ‘결정적 순간(Decisive Moment)’입니다. 찰나의 포착이죠. 반면 디자인은 오랜 시간 고민하는 과정입니다. 사진에 생각과 인내가 필요 없다는 뜻은 아니지만, 셔터는 눈 깜짝할 새보다 빠릅니다. 두 분야는 서로 다른 매체이자, 서로 다른 사고의 흐름을 가집니다.
그 소년은 이제 10살을 더 먹었고, 더 현명해졌습니다. 작년에 제게 연락해 자신의 재능을 일찍 알아봐 주어서 고맙다고 하더군요. 그는 지금 디자인 회사에서 일하며 다시 사진을 찍고 있는데, 사진들이 한층 성숙하고 사려 깊어 보였습니다. 그런 일을 마주할 때면 제 자신이 자랑스럽습니다. 제가 한 일이 누군가의 인생에 변화를 주었으니까요.
‘빛이 있으라(Let there be Light).’ 성경을 믿는 이들에게는 신이 가장 처음 내뱉은 말이죠. 빛이 없으면 아무것도 존재하지 않습니다. 빛이 없으면 사진도 없습니다. 빛은 사진의 본질(essence)이니까요. 그래서 피사체에 빛이 어떻게 떨어지는지, 즉 빛을 읽는 법을 가장 먼저 배워야 합니다. 대비(Contrast), 구도(Composition), 그리고 피사체(Subject). 사진 여행을 시작하기 위해 알아야 할 건 이것뿐입니다. 처음엔 단순해 보이지만, 열정이 커질수록 점점 더 복잡해지는 문제들이죠.
바로 이 지점에서 저 같은 사람이 등장해 인정과 방향성을 제시해 주는 겁니다. 이건 단순히 사진에 관한 문제가 아니라, 자신을 어떻게 인식하고 ‘나’라는 사람이 누구인지를 찾아가는 과정입니다. 이 첨단 기술의 세상에서 사진은 누구나 손안에 쥐고 있는 매체가 되었습니다. 너무나 당연하게 여겨지죠. 하지만 당신의 불타는 갈망에 답을 주는 건 호기심입니다. 그리고 ‘안다는 것(To know)’이 미래를 여는 열쇠입니다.
사진의 운명은 전적으로 과학에 달려 있습니다. 세계에서 가장 큰 카메라는 32억 화소(3.2 Gigapixels)라더군요. 제 캐논 5D는 2,230만 화소고요. 하지만 우리 일상에선 그걸로 충분합니다. 우리가 우주의 끝을 분석할 건 아니니까요. 하지만 급변하는 기술과 AI를 보면, 사진을 찍는다는 행위가 우리에게 어떤 의미로 변할지 누가 알겠습니까?
AI 시대에는, AI가 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 정교하고 디테일한 프롬프트(명령어)를 잘 쓰는 최고의 작가들이 최고의 사진가가 될지도 모릅니다. AI가 어디까지 갈지 누가 알까요? 하지만 제 믿음은 이렇습니다. 예술은 결국 아날로그(Analogue)가 될 것입니다. 예술을 창조하기 위해서는 인간의 손길, 단 하나의 고유한 인간의 손길(a singular human touch)이 필요합니다. 그것이 바로 예술입니다.”
